Squashed

Michele and I planted four hills of squash. Only two survived (thank god): zucchini and yellow crook neck. We thought we had been really diligent in keeping up with the zucchini, but one got away from us. Michele found it this morning. It is 18 inches long and weighs 4 pounds. The only thing we can think to make with it is a lamp.

Michele holds the freshly picked zucchini.

The zucchini is as big as Casey.

What's a hill of zucchini if there isn't an occasional runaway?

We didn't plant a vegetable garden this year. We used up all of our gardening enthusiasm on the roses. We're about to embark on our cool season crops.

That's a beauty! Today I picked mine that got away, but it's only seventeen inches long. There's another one that is too big to cook, so I'll wait a day or two and pick it and make sweet pickles out of them. Do you want the recipe?

The big ones are good for baked stuffed zucchini.
Momberts right. They make excellent sweet pickles and sweet relish. Tastes better than sweet pickle relish.
