In Trafalgar Square in London are four enormous plinths, only three of which have statues because financing for the fourth statue fell through. For the next three months, the empty fourth plinth will be a public art experiment, consisting of 2400 Britons climbing up on the plinth for an hour each and doing whatever the hell they want.

So far I haven't seen anything offensive. Nor anything particularly interesting. A woman ate breakfast. A man played a very energetic game of chess over the phone. Now some guy is listening to his iPod. A sting of paper dolls is caught in the net.
I'll keep checking now and then.
Thanks for pointing out this work of art.
I've watched off and on during the weekend. I saw the breakfast lady, toward the end. And the balloon lady and the bubble lady. Also the lady who just enjoyed the experience and took pictures and talked to folks. I haven't caught a man on yet. Right now is the singing bell ringing lady. Love and peace on earth.
If I were up there, I think I would do art. Either make a painting or do a Shakespeare reading or write a poem about the experience on a big white board. Art within art.
An interesting experiment.
Saw an interesting one this evening. A man who co-wrote an opera on the plight of deep-sea fisherman played his keyboard on the plinth while his youth choir sang below.
Yay for art within art!
